Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unwanted gifts could be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Auction

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures on official trips. This unusual assortment reportedly features items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date remains to be announced, but the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Holdings

These gifts reportedly stored in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.

A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The query centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a unconventional way to manage the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a time in office.
