Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.

The Recording That Provoked the Debate

The video footage, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in defense or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all made an oath to defend and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the risks to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Furious Response

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders React

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined announcement censuring the comments.

"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our country with great patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the safety of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and recant his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.

Representatives' Defiant Reaction

The representatives who appeared in the video also published a response.

"We are former service members and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental duty."

"The significant point is that the former president views it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "Every American must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."

More Governmental Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the death of government members."

He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and absolutely."

The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and determine all that."

Administration Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "No."

"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."

She said: "The purity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
