Diane Ladd, Known For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.

The Academy Award-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd passed away 89 years old.

This actor, with filmography featured Chinatown, passed away at home in California’s Ojai. This announcement was announced via an announcement shared by her offspring, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.

Her daughter, who performed alongside Diane Ladd in a number of films including Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero and my precious gift of a mother”, stating that she was by her side when she passed.

“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist along with caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Rise to Fame

Her initial acting years featured small roles on television series such as Gunsmoke whereas the seventies had her appearing with the legendary Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese acclaimed comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow as well as comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a sitcom inspired by her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she was given another Oscar nomination for supporting actress nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her real-life daughter Laura Dern’s role. A year later she was awarded a further nomination for her performance in the film Rambling Rose that also featured Laura Dern.

“This was the film which Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought us to the UK for a special screening and an event in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”

That decade also saw roles in humorous films The Cemetery Club reuniting her with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom once more. Those years also saw her score TV award nominations for roles on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and Mike White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened. She additionally starred with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.

Writing and Directing

She also authored and directed the comedy Mrs Munck featuring herself and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she noted. “It was a privilege to guide him in a film. Ladd was also a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact on my life”.

During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and informed her life expectancy was six months but she regained full health when her daughter moved her to a new hospital.

“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate similar to a wound, instead apply it to explore, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd expressed.
