Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.

If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
