Strong winter winds brought walls down upon fragile tents housing Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 people. These deaths highlights the dangerous living conditions that persist after over two years of intense airstrikes and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers No Relief from Harsh Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect since last fall, humanitarian organizations state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter necessary to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, reported on Tuesday that the dead include two women, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has allowed us to witness death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 people of a single family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of Gaza City. At least five additional people were injured in the event.

Family members on that day began clearing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as food and hygiene items throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population reside in improvised shelters since their houses were reduced to rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Numbers After the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the Hamas-run government, reports over 440 people have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the truce began. The ministry maintains comprehensive fatality data that are seen as largely accurate by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least one hundred minors under the age of 18 – 60 males and forty females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire started due to armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, represented cases where sufficient details had been compiled to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He added that many hundreds of children had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls quiet would be considered a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly needed throughout the winter months. It’s the third winter since the conflict involving Israel and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and murdered approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over 71,400 Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
