International Bodies and the UK Decry a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Jail Sentence.
The judicial ruling of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Human rights organizations and international powers have described the national security convictions politically motivated.
Global Condemnation and Calls for Release
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the lengthy imprisonment constitutes a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She described the prosecution as politically motivated under a law intended to muzzle Beijing's detractors. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.
“This ruling demonstrates how the vague and overly broad provisions of Hong Kong’s legal framework are subject to interpretation in breach of international human rights obligations,” remarked the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deplores” the conclusion of the judicial process and pushed for his immediate and unconditional release.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was detained following the imposition of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was passed by China's government after widespread unrest backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was sentenced on charges including conspiracy to produce seditious material and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The latter charges were pursuant to the controversial security law.
Personal Fears
The activist's child, Sebastien, expressed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. Lai's defense lawyers has called him the “globally most notable prisoner of conscience” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the outcome was foreseen, its reality was harsher than imagined, yet it provided some “solace” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
International Ramifications
The sentencing has cast a shadow over the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case in a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, visible progress towards his release is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the upside to improved bilateral relations announced recently, remarking it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Authorities' Statements
In contrast, the officials from China applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee stated the verdict showed that “justice is served.”
The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, called Lai the “chief architect” behind previous protests and maintained the prosecution was “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries to refrain from intervention in what he termed China's internal issues.
A Defining Moment
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders labeled Lai as a icon for declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general stated it was a “somber occasion for those who value a liberty of the press.”
With a near 100% conviction rate for charges under the security law, Lai’s harsh punishment is viewed as the strictest yet imposed under the security statute.
