Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.

Legal Background Behind the Objections

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to showcase Seattle’s proud history of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
  • Organizers are committed to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the city during the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant most prominent Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” organizers concluded.
