Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Team

England have opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.

The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged five past matches.

In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the more likely decision.

Alternative Choices Weighed

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.

However the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
