The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
