The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
